President’s Message Spring 2026

Welcome Spring!

Since the winter business meeting in February, your board has been parsing the data from the Mentimeter responses collected during the meeting. We solicited the membership for folks interested in drafting a strategic plan once all this data is listed by priority. If this is something you would like to be a part of contact Cora Lee at treasurer@mra.org

Chris Ruch has been working on updating Policy 103.1 and creating an evaluator training program. He is planning that a draft will be available to the membership prior to the June Membership meeting.

A Membership Survey is being sent to the team leads to determine the impact ownership changes of public lands may have on their area of operation/training if any. This information is for fact-finding purposes to help us understand the potential impact this could have on SAR readiness, response capabilities, training, and long-term sustainability. This information will be used to understand the situation and share with each other so that we are better prepared if any changes are forthcoming.

Many of you might know Bill Cotton of Diamond Peaks Ski Patrol. He has volunteered to act as Liaison between National Ski Patrol and the MRA.

Bill Campbell has left the MRA as Medical Committee Chair and Alison Sheets will be assuming that role and forming a new committee.

A reminder to California, Inter-Mountain, Oregon, and Washington region teams that they are to elect one individual to serve as a Board Member at least thirty days before the annual Membership meeting in June.

After 16 years the MRA Spring Conference is coming back to Juneau, Alaska. It was held in Anchorage, Alaska in 2004. Juneau Mountain Rescue and Alaska Mountain Rescue Group are co-hosting this time. The Planning Committee compared venues between Anchorage and Juneau and found the least expensive in Anchorage was more than the most expensive in Juneau. As conference costs seem to be more each year, we selected Juneau for the venue. We look forward to seeing you here.

Cheers, Mark
